Rants & Rambles 1 (Jhene Aiko Vs Cassie)

So I was people watching at lunch like I usually do, and these two girls next to me were arguing over whether or not Jhene Aiko’s career would end up like Cassie’s.

First and foremost, I couldn’t really fathom that this was the conversation they were having.  We got people eating faces out here and selling bath salts on the corner, and we talking bout baby voiced Asian singers?! Anyway, I guess it wasn’t too dumb since it’s still on my mind.

If you don’t know, Jhene Aiko is the sister of another baby voiced Asian Mila J.  They also have older sisters who were in an R&B group that toured with Immature.  The Chris Stokes possibly touched me and Aiko family apparently were close, close enough where Jhene started appearing on B2K Christmas albums and later on went to have a kid with Omarion’s brother.

You should know Cassie’s story by now.  Pretty girl who can’t sing until she’s locked in a studio with Ryan Leslie who basically teaches her to sing EXACTLY like him.  Don’t get me wrong, that first album had some good songs, but we’re not calling her up to do VH1 Divas anytime soon.  Short-lived and mediocre as it was, it was enough for her to become Diddy’s side chick, resulting in a life that’s probably better than 90 % of ours.

So will Miss. Aiko go down the same route?  No…well I hope not.

Unlike Cassie, she can hold a note longer than 4 seconds and has a versatile style of different songs she can sing over.  She also has an eclectic style of music, her mixtape/album “sailing (s)ouls” is one of the best chill mixtapes of 2011.  She’s not the Elle Varner type who’s gonna annoy you with vocal just because she has them, and she sings music that fits well with her singing.

She signed a deal with Atrium (No I.D.’s label) in December, and with good management and some nice in home Def Jam features (Which is everyone within the past year) I think Jhene has a nice little career in front of her.

Check out her track “Higher” and if you like it, download the FREE mixtape.

But Cassie wins because she doesn’t have a kid with OMARION’S BROTHER!! I’m not calling that man “Maybach O” either, so chill!

Day 8 (A Song You Know All The Words To)

Ma$e - “Feel So Good”

Even though I’m pretty much a human jukebox and can remember lyrics better than I can remember my girlfriend’s birthdays, this is probably a song I always sing the whole way through.

Ma$e had one of the illest flows and one of the most laid back copied styles ever.

Take hits from the 80s? But do it sound so crazy?

Day 7 (A Song That Reminds You of A Certain Event)

R. Kelly Ft. OJ Da Juiceman & Gucci Mane’s Adlibs - “Superman High”

BURR BURR BURR!

Yea..if you would of told me OJ Da Juiceman would be mentioned in this challenge I would of said you’re crazy, but I guess I’m the crazy one right?

Unfortunately, the event is not about getting “Superman High” but is about the event that occurred a couple of summers ago when I spent a week with someone I really care about.

Whether it was driving to Dorney Park, The Jersey Shore, or just around the corner for Putt Putt, this song was ALWAYS on and I ALWAYS acted a fool.

In fact, I always act a fool with her and that’s why I love her.  Every time I see Kirsten I think about when I first met her at 12.  I thought she was beautiful, funny, and although shy, someone I was comfortable to be myself around.

Although we’ve had our ups and downs and I’m not always there for her like she deserves, she should know that I love her to death and always will no matter what.

While going to Philly to see my family is always important for me, it would mean a lot less if I didn’t see the person who was the first one to show me the qualities of not just a woman, but a person that I’ll always want in my life.

Day 5 (A Song That Reminds You of Someone)

Black Eyed Peas - “Alive”

I know…this song is STUPID CHEESY but I think I have a thing for cheesy songs.

Also, don’t front that bassline is dope. (Even though the hook is the same bassline from The New Radicals “Get What You Give.”

Anyway, as lame as it sounds, it kind of does describe something I went through a little while back with a certain one.  Add on the synthesizer solo and the beat switch up, in another era with another artist, I’m pretty sure this had hit potential.

Day 4- (A Song That Makes You Sad)

Corinne Bailey Rae - “I’d Do It All Again”

I usually don’t get sad about songs but this is one of those that really gets to you.

If you don’t know the back story, the song, was written by Rae immediately after an argument with her late husband Jason Rae in January 2008.

She stated in an interview

“It was written literally just after me and Jason had this massive disagreement, a big argument, a bad one. Almost as he was leaving the room, I just sat down and wrote it. It’s just about how I felt about him at that time. Even right in the middle of the worst times, I remember thinking that I would choose this exact life again, that I would do it all again. It was me saying, I’m not wishing myself out of this situation. I’m 100 percent committed to this person. I don’t have any regrets about this relationship even though there are all these difficult times.”

That was literally the last song she wrote about him before his death in March of that year.  It’s sad not just because she lost him, but because for her to say that she’d choose the exact life again even after her worst argument with him, show’s that she was truly in love with him and was willing to sacrifice her pride to make a successful happy relationship. True love = No Regrets.

Not only is it extremely hard to find someone that unselfish in today’s society, but I know for her it’s gotta be nearly impossible to believe she’ll find love like that again.

I’ve always wanted someone I could feel the same way Corinne did about Jason, so for her to have that rarity taken away…is pretty sad.

Day 3- (A Song That Makes You Happy)

Ghost Town DJ’s - “My Boo”

Besides the fact the song itself is a fun ass joint you can’t help but dance to (or bob your head if you don’t do the whole dance thing) it’s also a song with some meaning.

At the time when this song came out (1996) I use to drive to school with my mom to downtown ATL since my school was down the street from her job.

I just remember loving everything about the city, the time spent with my mom, and everything during that time.

It’s one of those songs that always come on at the perfect time and no matter what the mood is I can’t help but smile.

I don’t care what anyone says, the 90’s were different and so were the people.
